Distant Drums is a song which provided US singer Jim Reeves with his only UK No. 1 hit albeit posthumously in the United Kingdom in 1966, some two years after his death in a plane crash on 31 July 1964. The song remained in the UK Singles Chart for 25 weeks. The single also topped the US country chart for four weeks, becoming his most successful posthumous single. Although Roy Orbison had recorded the song in 1963, it is Reeves' version of Distant Drums which has endured over the years. The Twinkle Brothers marry their hotel circuit past to their cultural present on this striking number from their 1979 Love mini-album. The Brothers had also found success in the island's festival contests, and this ability to please both local crowds and visiting foreigners would soon provide the band with the key to international success. On Distant Drums, the group takes a deeply romantic number and fills it with a rich lushness, which pools around Norman Grant's warm, soulful vocals and his bandmates' lovely harmonies, further heated by the celebratory, jazz-tinge.
