Released by Warp Records in September 1991, it is the act's only album as a group before it became a solo vehicle for George Evelyn. Listening to this I am taken back to the days before the Criminal Justice act put a stop to all those free parties where acid, E's and whiz were the Mode de Jour, the people, music and venues would be eclectic, and you would be dancing along with crusties, rude boys, ravers and students in old warehouses, empty factories, stone circles or even in caves. Very much of it's time. Most of it doesn't have the lushness of more contemporary Electronica and maybe hasn't aged that well but "Nights interlude" and "Aftermath" still sound great today.

OK...The C.J.B put's a stop to my culture and everything I live for. It get's a little atention in the media and a small number of people actually try to do something and fight it...then it goes away and now I can't find a free outdoor party for the life of me. As far as I know they don't even happen any more. I feel like a contestant in a massive social experiment who, at the moment is loosing. And every night I sit in and watch telly the audiance and the people who designed the experiment are laughing at me...then going out and having a party in the woods, field, quarry, warehouse, unused airfield and so on.....

i bought this when it first came out with the free sticker and packet of rizla. an absolute classic that sounded like little else at the time. the mix of bleeps and funk and the fact that this features the first incarnation of 'nights interlude' make this a pretty essential release.

Madness. At the time, this album was very cool indeed. Some great tracks, still sounding fresh. It may be raw, but man does it have vibes. And I very much enjoyed the free N.O.W. skins and put them to good use... Megadonutz...

Mind you, Nightmares On Wax first offering is quite different than later releases. The tracks are rawer and more robotic, although you wouldn't say so listening to the excellent opening theme "Nights Interlude". Directly afterwards we get "A Case Of Funk", a great leftfield groove with a thundering bassline. The incorporated samples lend the track some welcome depth. However, what follows is not very worth mentioning. Most of the tracks only seem to have an ongoing rattling drumbeat without much underneath ("Coming Down", "Biofeedback", "Fun" and "Dextrous") or have annoying samples that are repeated over and over ("Aftermath" and "Sal"). The two hiphop oriented tracks, "Mega Donutz" and "How Ya Doin?", feel very cheap and uninspired. "Back In Time" nicely samples Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle", but, unfortunately, not much is done with it. The cut'n'paste human beatboxing of "B.W.T.M." is fun one time, but grows unnerving over time. "Playtime" and "E.A.S.E." are two easygoin' downtempo tracks in the style that Nightmares on Wax would carry into later albums. So pick your highs and leave this album getting dusted.
